Peter holding a yellowfin tuna A typical “local” yellowfin tuna, about 15 pounds, taken aboard the Tracer from San Diego. In late summer, the overnight boats often get into wide open bites on these fish. The yellowfin is the hardest-pulling fish for its size I’ve ever encountered, and fish this size are great fun on light tackle.

The long-range trips out of San Diego get into bigger yellowfin the farther south they go. This is a 74-pounder I got on a 10-day trip on the Royal Star.

On some trips (especially the 15+ day ones) tuna of over 300 pounds are taken, but I haven’t seen any much over 100 pounds.
