Peter holding a yellowtail

A 12 pound yellowtail.

Yellowtail are about the hardest-fighting inshore fish taken in southern California. Besides pulling hard, they’ll swim into snags or even try to scrape the line on the bottom of the boat to get away.

Here are a pair of 15-pounders I caught at the Coronado Islands aboard the Tracer.

Here’s a 30 pounder I caught at Catalina Island while on a friend’s private boat. It’s a little chewed up because a sea lion attacked it when I finally got it up close to the boat. Beating the water with a deck brush scared the freeloader away enough so we could put the fish on board.

Yellowtail are also taken out in the open ocean, usually near floating pieces of kelp or other debris.

This is a 34 pounder, taken on an iron jig from a kelp paddy aboard the Sun Rise from San Diego.
