A 12 pound yellowtail. Yellowtail are about the hardest-fighting inshore fish taken in southern
California. Besides pulling hard, they’ll swim into snags or even
try to scrape the line on the bottom of the boat to get away. |
Here are a pair of 15-pounders I caught
at the Coronado Islands aboard the Tracer. |
Here’s a 30 pounder I caught at Catalina
Island while on a friend’s private boat. It’s a little chewed
up because a sea lion attacked it when I finally got it up close to
the boat. Beating the water with a deck brush scared the freeloader
away enough so we could put the fish on board. |
Yellowtail are also taken out in the open ocean, usually near floating pieces of kelp or other debris. This is a 34 pounder, taken on an iron jig from a kelp paddy aboard
the Sun Rise from San Diego. |
